The International Governing Committee of the Star Class is pleased to announce that Club LaPelle and the Marseille France Star Fleet has been awarded the 2012 World Championship.
Club La Pelle was established on Marseilles south district beaches in 1923 and includes well known sailors such as Nicolas Huguet, Olympic windsurfing world champion; Paul Ambroise Sevestre, three Olympic campaigns for France - first in Laser, then Star and Tornado; and Xavier Rohart, twice Star Class World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist.
Recently the club organized the 1999 and 2003 Star Class 9th District Championships and the 2001 Eastern Hemisphere Championship.
The racing area is the south bay of Marseille, protected from the northwest Wind (Mistral) by the Frioul Islands, and from the southeast and east by the Marseille Veyre hills and the famous Massif des Callanques. The racing area's nearest point is 400 meters from the shore facilities and club. Starting areas are one and a half mile sailing from the Club.
Other Star World Championships pending are July 30 - August 9, 2009 in Varberg, Sweden , January 12-23, 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the 2011 ISAF Worlds at Perth, Australia on December 3-18.
